We’ve got the new Fall shades from Jane Iredale, and our staff is loving the pretty warm colors of the Warm Eye Steppes! What’s not to love?!

They fold out and include a mirror, so it’s easy to apply on the go
The warm shades are gorgeous for Fall and can be blended together nicely for your own custom look
All shades are dermatologist tested and hypoallergenic, and they don’t crease!

We like to apply a neutral shade over the lid, a darker shade along the crease of the eye (making a sideways “v” along the corner of the eye), then a lighter shade under the brow.

Flakey Skin This Summer? Tips for Staying Hydrated!

Don't let the summer heat dehydrate your skin!

address the issue of flakey summer skin. It seems confusing that, with all the sweating we do in summer, our skin would look dry. But it actually isn’t “dry” (lacking oil)…it is “dehydrated” (lacking WATER).

Here’s a few tips to beat flakey skin:

Take your body weight, divide it by 2, then divide that number by 8. That’s how many 8 oz. glasses of water you should be drinking daily.
ie: If you weigh 125 lbs: 125 ÷ 2 = 62.5 ÷8 = 7.8. So…you should be drinking close to 8 glasses of water daily.
Use a product with Hyaluronic Acid. This amazing ingredient holds up to 1,000 times its weigh in water (which basically means it’s SUPER hydrating). Our skin contains Hyaluronic Acid in the dermal layer, so the skin readily accepts this ingredient since it is recognizable. Our favorite is Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster.
Splash your face with water (or spritz with toner) before applying moisturizer. Your skin will accept the cream better.

Skin Care During Pregnancy: Melasma

Melasma is a common concern, and is characterized by dark spots on the forehead, nose, upper cheeks and lips. While the precise cause is unknown, it is believed that excess estrogen and progesterone during pregnancy may stimulate pigment-producing cells to create more melanin. Although it is an annoyance, melasma is typically just a cosmetic concern and not a health issue.

Solutions:

We do know that the sun can make melasma much worse, so it is VERY important to wear an SPF 15 for daily use (and an SPF 30 if you will be outside for extended periods).Be sure that your sunscreen has UVA and UVB protection.

-Try Sheer Tint Moisturizer SPF 15 (for oily to normal skin)

- Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30 (for normal to very dry skin)

-Pure Light SPF 30 (for normal to dry skin).
Many “lightening” ingredients should be avoided during pregnancy, especially Hydroquinone (which is not used in any Dermalogica products) and Vitamin A products. Remember, melasma often gets much better after giving birth. To be safe, save any skin lightening treatments until you are done breast feeding. At that time, you can try chemical peels, Lactic Acid products (which are probably safe during pregnancy) or laser treatments

Skin Care During Pregnancy: Acne

During pregnancy, progesterone (a female hormone) levels are elevated. This often results in acne breakouts, and is even more likely if you tend to break out during your monthly cycle. Acne is typically worst during the first trimester because this is when progesterone levels are most elevated. The good news is that after giving birth, the acne problems tend to go away.

How to help this problem:

-Get in the habit of cleansing every morning and night for at least 1 minute.

-Avoid cleansers that are formulated for acne, as they often contain Salicylic Acid and other ingredients that are not recommended during pregnancy.

-Many acne solutions (like Vitamin A derivatives and Benzoyl Peroxide) should be avoided, your focus should be on keeping your skin as clean as possible.

-A healthy diet can also benefit skin.
