Can microdermabrasion treat sun damage? August 11, 2010

Many of our clients are concerned with sun damage.  Sometimes sun spots are more topical, but many times they are the result of a lifetime of sun exposure. There is never a guarantee when it comes to treating sun damage, but a combination of treatment and products is your best bet!

Microdermabrasion is often promoted to treat sun spots…it treats them by exfoliating off pigmented skin cells. To boost the effects, a skin therapist can apply skin brightening products after a microderm. The ingredients should penetrate into the skin better since there isn’t a layer of dead skin cells for them to work through.

One microdermabrasion isn’t enough to see change when it comes to sun damage.  A series is always recommended (at least 4 treatments). Why? Because sun damage doesn’t happen over night, and can’t be treated in one session. Several weeks of treatments can start to make a difference in the skin.

Remember…don’t trust anyone that promises to get rid of sun damage! There is no guarantee. Here are some guidelines to follow to get the best results:

  • Commit to a microdermabrasion schedule (as recommended by a skin therapist)
  • Wear your sunscreen every day (even if you are just running errands)…click here to see why!
  • Use an exfoliant at home (look for brightening ingredients ingredients like Lactic Acid, Phytic Acid, Vitamin C)
  • If you are outside for a long period, wear a hat and try to stay shaded…1 day of sun exposure can counteract any results you are seeing

Disclaimer: Skin Care Logic has a relationship with the above products in that we sell them in our store and at our facial studio.http://cmp.ly/4 We love them, and we think you will too!

Dark spots on the skin are typically the result of sun damage. Unfortunately, it can take sun damage a looong time to surface. That means that sun we received as a teen may not show up until much later in life!

Treating sun spots can be tricky, but it can be done. Here are a few tips:

  • Find an effective routine and STICK TO IT! Expect at least a minimum of 4 months before you see results. If you are on and off with your product regimen, you will inhibit the process.
  • Wear SPF30 every day. The sun can completely reverse any progress you are making.
  • Get professional exfoliating treatments in conjuction with your skin care routine. Exfoliating is an effective way to lighten sun spots…a skin therapist can accelerate your results.
